About the Chemistry-Biology Interface (CBI) Program

The Chemistry–Biology Interface (CBI) Training Program at UMass Amherst is an NIH-funded graduate training program designed to prepare scientists to work fluently at the intersection of chemistry and biology. Supported by a National Institutes of Health (NIH) T32 training grant and matching institutional funds from UMass Amherst, CBI provides interdisciplinary training that reflects the reality of modern biomedical and biological research—where complex questions require integrated chemical, biological, and quantitative approaches.

CBI trainees are immersed in a collaborative research environment that brings together faculty and students from across disciplines. Through structured training, mentorship, and professional development, the program equips graduate students with the tools to conduct rigorous, reproducible science and to pursue impactful careers in academia, industry, government, and beyond.
